Shaping the Future of Family Medicine
SOAR Scholars are driving the way we understand and improve family medicine residency education.
Our scholars have:
Presented research on the link between curricular models and graduate practice patterns.
Published in peer-reviewed journals on innovations in resident assessment.
Developed actionable insights into how residency structure affects care delivery in underserved communities.
Identified opportunities to enhance residency training experience for IMG trainees
Explored resident characteristics for interest in time variable training models and CBME
These passionate researchers are not only generating knowledge—they’re shaping policy, improving programs, and mentoring the next generation of leaders in family medicine.
Explore. Research. Lead.
The Strengthening Outcomes and Assessments in Residency (SOAR) Visiting Scholar Program is a unique opportunity for innovative, forward-thinking individuals passionate about advancing family medicine education. Sponsored by The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), SOAR invites scholars to dive deep into the data and dynamics that shape residency training and workforce development.
Each year, selected SOAR Scholars gain access to:
- A week-long immersive experience at the ABFM, working alongside national experts.
- Support in developing research questions, analyzing residency outcomes data, and producing publishable manuscripts.
- Funding from the ABFM Foundation and AFMRD to present their work at national events such as the AAFP Residency Leadership Summit.
